We're Callin' For Artists!
Mellow Massage Therapy Center in the East Falls section of Philadelphia is looking for artists for their bi-monthly event, Mellow Nights. Mellow Nights will combine fine art, live music, and massage therapy as a fundraiser for various charitable organizations that support the same artistic endeavors. The first event will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2009.
The chosen artist will have their original artwork featured on the evening of the affair in a “gallery-opening style” event. Artwork will then be required to hang in the lobby and treatment rooms at Mellow Massage Therapy Center for a time period of 2 months.
All pieces will be made available to clients for purchase. Whatever pieces are not sold must be picked up at the end of this 2 month period.
We are looking for art that inspires and/or compliments a relaxing atmosphere. Pieces should be of any medium, however they must be easily hung on a wall. Free standing sculptures will not qualify.
For submission, please provide a link to your electronic portfolio / website. You may also submit 5 samples of your work via e-mail attachment to info@mellowmassage.com. Please note, though only 5 pieces are required as submission for consideration, more may be needed for the exhibit dependent upon the size or the artwork.
You will be notified via email if we choose to display your art. The deadline for submission is Monday, September 7, 2009. All submissions not chosen for the upcoming event will be considered for subsequent months.
Please send questions to Vanessa Hazzard-Tillman at vanessa@mellowmassage.com.

Tips on Staying Mellow!
Extending Healthy Living Beyond the Massage Center
Welcome to the first installment of Tips on Staying Mellow! If you are reading this then you are already on the wellness path. I like to think of being healthy as a journey that changes with and complements your life as opposed to an unattainable destination met only by the select few. It’s those little steps you take now that pay off big months and years down the line. Those steps could be taking a 20-30 minute stroll on a nice day, grabbing an apple with peanut (my personal favorite) as a refreshing snack, or even just taking a moment to stretch after sitting at a computer all day (great for preventing carpal tunnel syndrome).
Here, you will find these tips and more on a weekly basis. I encourage your feedback! If you try any of these tips or have any of your own, please post them! The wellness path is best traveled with a group of sincere, positive people! In fact, according to an article in Whole Living Magazine, a study at the University College London found that people in troubled relationships had a higher risk of health problems. “Such bad vibes can lead to chronic stress, elevating hormones, that can cause aging, arrhythmia, diabetes, and high cholesterol,” explains Mimi Guarneri, M.D., cardiologist and medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, CA. Though this study was more referring to dating and marriage, any kind of negative relationship can cause wear and tear on you emotionally and mentally which undoubtedly can take a stressful toll on your body.
…Which brings us to Stay Mellow Tip #1: Get therapeutic massages often.
Now coming from a massage therapist, that’s kind of a no-brainer. But massage therapy is extremely effective in relieving mental and emotional stress as well as physical stress. According to Prevention Magazine, receiving a massage can cut cortisol levels up to 31%. It also is extremely effective in the increase of dopamine and serotonin. Massage is also affordable. You can book a relaxing Swedish massage or an invigorating deep tissue massage at Mellow for only $75 for an hour session. If you get a massage twice a month, that’s less than $5.36 a day. That’s less than a trip to Dunkin Donuts…and better for you too!
Stay tuned for the next edition of Tips on Staying Mellow: Recipes For Getting a Good Night’s Sleep…its easier than you might think!

It's heart month!
SAVE 10% on ANY online purchase of a 60 or 90 min Gift Certificate from now until February 21, 2009.
February is heart month!
It's heart month!
In February, the American Heart Association steps up its educational efforts communicating the seriousness of heart disease and its prevention.
Relaxation and heart health
A range of techniques including massage, relaxing music, guided relaxation and yoga have shown promising results in lowering blood pressure and heart rate -- factors that have a positive effect on heart health. Recent research indicates that relaxation techniques can reduce strain on the heart.
One study from Duke University followed cardiac patients over a period of years. The program included education on stress and specific techniques to relax the body and mind. Participants in the program showed a significant reduction in heart attacks. In another study, at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, yoga and meditation significantly reduced the impact of cardiac disease on patients.
Taking charge
Many people feel victimized by stress. But relaxation can reverse the ill effects of stress by helping you learn to respond differently.
The key is to practice relaxing regularly. If you take time during your workday for a 15-minute massage, a lunchtime yoga class, or simply breathing slowly and deeply for several minutes, you'll let go of stress buildup and start to relax. If you make this a regular habit, you can retrain your mind to stay balanced in the face of stress.
So this month get an extra massage, take a yoga class every single week, or start that meditation practice again. Your heart will thank you!

Cleansing the Temple: New Detox Massage Treatment!
I find it interesting that our lives are so different from what they were 50 – 60 years ago. Food was fresher and more dependable as a source of nutrition.
Did you know that as recent as the early part of the 20th century, most American food was organically grown? Yup. Grown straight from the earth as it should be -- without synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, growth hormones and other harmful additives. It was pure. Maybe it didn’t last as long as it does now… sitting stiff as tough plastic on supermarket shelves for months at a time. Lasting only because of its chemically altered makeup. But it was fresh while it did last… and it tasted so good.
And food isn’t the only way we are exposed to toxins. Chemically altered food, harsh cleaners and chemicals, non-biodegradable trash and other foreign substance litter our earth -- and our bodies.
Today, with the explosion of toxicity levels within the body, we can not afford to forgo internal cleansing rituals. What is internal cleansing? I’m so glad you asked. Its just as it sounds… cleansing the inside of ones body in order to rid the self of toxic buildup. Researchers believe that this toxic buildup is one of the main causes of many diseases and cancers currently plaguing the human race. Cleansing gives your body a chance to rid itself of toxins by stopping the flow of unnatural inputs in order to allow the body to refresh and rejuvenate itself. The body has an amazing ability to self heal but with chemically burdened organs, it’s almost impossible for the process to take affect.
Some internal cleanses involve fasting or the use of fresh organic fruit and vegetable juices, while others focus on eliminating all processed foods from the diet for a significant period of time. Herbal supplements can be taken to help the process along, such as liver and colon cleansers. After researching, which ever method you deem appropriate for your lifestyle will likely benefit you in your quest to cleanse your body from the inside out.
Massage Therapy goes along very well with any cleansing program. Manipulation of the soft tissue in the body releases stored toxins from within tight muscles. After this release, proper hydration will help the body to eliminate this toxic buildup.
For the perfect addition to your internal cleansing regimen, try our Stay Mellow Detoxifying Massage Treatment
In a world in which toxins are abundant, it’s important to find ways to detoxify the body. Our newest service, the Detoxifying Massage Treatment uses Rosemary, Burdock, Echinacea, Lemon, Figwort, Watercress, Geranium, Coriander, Orange, and Eucalyptus infused cream to cleanse the skin and body. The treatment helps to support a healthy immune system by stimulating circulation, releasing impurities, and helping to ease muscular discomfort while fighting inflammation.
So go ahead… get that squeaky clean feeling… from the inside out.
Namaste,
Gerrae

Introducing...
We are pleased to announce our newest modality, Thai Herbal Compress (also known as Thai Herbal Ball Therapy) Straight from traditional Thai medicine, this celebrated therapy incorporates the use of a steamed, herb-filled cotton compress with the more familiar strokes of our Swedish massage.
Our compress is filled with various medicinal herbs formulated from the time-honored recipe of the Wat Po temple in Bangkok. It's great for relaxing tight muscles, relieving joint pain and encouraging blood circulation. The intoxicating scent of the herbal mixture along with the warmth of the compress is sure to leave you feeling balanced.
After your session, take your Thai herbal compress home!
The compress can be used 3-4 more times after your visit to Mellow!
Recommended at-home uses:
- Wet herbal compress and hang it in the shower. Enjoy the aromatic therapeutic effects (helps to open up the sinuses!)
- Soak herbal compress in a medium size pot of water for 10 minutes. Next, steam for 10 more minutes. Apply compress to sore muscles to relieve pain and tightness.
Please store your compress in the refrigerator when not in use.
Caution: This herbal compress should not be used on pregnant women, people with high blood pressure, and those who are sensitive to extreme heat.

Crusade!
Life shouldn’t be filled with booked solid schedules that leave no time to breathe. Massage Therapy is great in that it combats stress in a number of ways. One very apparent way is in its ability to force us to STOP. Stop movement, stop phone calls, stop answering blackberry e-mail messages… and… just… breathe. It’s very simple and effective.
We believe wholeheartedly in the effective nature of Massage Therapy. It helps to de-stresses us… and it will help to de-stress you too. :)
Peace.
